PORTLAND ALUMINIUM VOLUNTEERS TO "READ ALOUD" TO CELEBRATE CHILDREN'S BOOK WEEK
While Children’s Book Week began back in 1945 after WWII, with the idea that we could be ‘United Through Books’, seventy two years on and with the advent of new digital channels, it remains a challenge to ensure quality books are available in every Australian home.
What many of us don’t realise is that, for a range of reasons – including parents with low literacy, from non English speaking backgrounds, and low income – many children in Australia do not encounter books until their first day of school. For many of these children, making their first connection to books in the school environment is accompanied by frustration and struggle. The research is clear – the foundations for literacy begin well before a child’s first day of school.
As we mark Children’s Book Week, Portland Aluminium employees will go into all Primary Schools across the Glenelg Shire to celebrate the importance of reading aloud.
Portland Aluminium employees will read “Otto: The Book Bear” to children in prep and encourage families to continue reading to their children as their imaginations grow.
