Our Focus

Community Resiliency

Together we are building a resilient community because resilience means more than bouncing back, it means standing together

Small acts, taken together can make a meaningful difference

We stand with communities to prepare for, prevent, and respond to challenges – whether it’s crisis support or disaster response.  By strengthening connections and building local capacity, we ensure people have the help they need when it matters most. Together, we create stronger, safer, and more supportive communities ready to face adversity head-on.

Emergency preparedness and disaster response are critical priorities in Glenelg Shire, where bushfires, floods, and severe weather pose ongoing risks. Rural isolation, an ageing population, and limited resources heighten vulnerability, making strong local response and recovery systems essential. United Way Glenelg is focused on mobilising community responses, strengthening preparedness, and supporting long-term recovery.

Social isolation is another growing challenge, particularly for older adults, carers, and people in remote areas. Disconnection undermines wellbeing and weakens community resilience. United Way Glenelg works to build peer support, connection, and collaboration, reducing loneliness and strengthening local networks.

Environmental health and climate resilience are emerging concerns, with heatwaves, poor air quality, and environmental degradation creating health risks.

Our initiatives

Chatty Benches

Chatty Benches play a simple yet powerful role in building healthy communities and strengthening community resilience. Placed in public spaces across the Glenelg Shire, they invite people to pause, connect, and have a friendly chat, helping to reduce loneliness and encourage a sense of belonging. More than just a place to sit, each bench becomes a beacon,...

Christmas Hampers

United Way Glenelg’s Christmas Hampers bring comfort and joy to older residents experiencing hardship during the festive season, offering pantry staples, treats, and essential items to help individuals celebrate with dignity. Supported through the United Way Glenelg Lewis Court Fund, this initiative helps reduce isolation and hardship among older residents and vulnerable people. The Lewis Court Fund...

Magic of Storytime

The Magic of Storytime offers children a rich and imaginative experience that sparks curiosity and a love of stories, while also creating opportunities for parents and caregivers to connect, share, and build friendships. We bring this initiative to families across the Glenelg Shire: at the Portland Library for children, parents, and caregivers; at Heywood Rural Health where...

Winter Care Packages

As winter approaches, we are seeking support to deliver 200 Winter Care Packages to older residents in need. Many of these residents face serious health issues, chronic diseases, isolation, and loneliness. For some financially stretched residents, this could mean limiting the use of heating, food, and electricity. Your donation will help to alleviate these struggles and provide...
